ELI5: bronze age
The Bronze Age is a time in human history, thousands of years ago, when people figured out how to make tools and weapons out of a strong metal called bronze instead of just using rocks and sticks.
Before this time, people lived in the Stone Age. Imagine trying to build a treehouse using only sharp rocks; it works, but the rocks break easily and are hard to shape.
Then, humans made an amazing discovery:
- They found that if they heated up copper rock over a very hot fire, it would melt into a shiny liquid.
- Next, they mixed that liquid copper with a little bit of another metal called tin.
- This mixture cooled down into a brand new, super-strong metal called bronze.
Making bronze is just like baking a cake. If you only use flour, it falls apart, but if you mix flour with eggs and bake it, you get something much stronger and better.
Because bronze was so tough, it changed the world in big ways:
- Better Farming: Farmers made bronze plows to dig up hard dirt, allowing them to grow way more food than before.
- Safer Communities: People made strong bronze shields, helmets, and swords to protect their homes.
- Trade and Travel: Tin and copper were rarely found in the same place. People had to build boats and travel far away to trade with other groups, which helped different cultures meet and share new ideas.
With more food and better tools, people stopped moving around to hunt. They built the world's first big cities, invented the wheel, and even started writing things down for the very first time. The Bronze Age ended when people eventually figured out how to make fires hot enough to melt an even stronger metal called iron.
