ELI5: adverbs

An adverb is a helper word that tells us more about an action by describing how, when, or where something happens in our daily lives.

Think of action words (verbs) like eating, running, or sleeping as plain vanilla ice cream. Adverbs are the sprinkles and chocolate sauce you add on top to make the story more colorful and exciting.

Instead of just saying what you are doing, an adverb tells the whole story of how you do it:

• How you do things: If you want a cookie before dinner, you might walk quietly into the kitchen. If you are excited for the playground, you put your shoes on quickly. The words quietly and quickly show the way you did those actions.
• When you do things: You brush your teeth today, you will go to the park tomorrow, and you wash your hands always before lunch. The words today, tomorrow, and always tell us the time it happens.
• Where you do things: When it rains, you play inside. When the sun comes out, you run outside. The words inside and outside show the place where you play.
• How much you do things: If your soup is hot, you might say it is very hot. If you are tired, you might be almost asleep.
